Answers
Ibrahim Saleh al-Husseini: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, and the Most Merciful. A follower (Mamoom), should not follow an Imam, if he does not control or is unable to catch Imam’s movements, and if the Imam is far away, you must attend the mosque, or you must not follow him if something prevents you from offering the prayer. This is mentioned if you are unable to control his movements and cannot guarantee your safe and correct following to him. In the Maliki School, it is known; that it is permissible for the Mamoom to follow an Imam in a long distance. So, it is permissible for one person who is in Abu Qubayis (a place) to follow the Imam of the Ka'ba. This is the quote of Imam Malik, may God have mercy on him, and it is permissible for the Mamoom to follow an Imam who hears his voice and catch his movements, even if there have a road, or a river, or a stream of water, or a distance between them. All these are permissible, and therefore if the medium of following the imam is through Proficient loudspeakers, and usually it does not cut off so it is permissible to follow him from a distance, but if it is interrupted, it is not permissible to imitate him in this case, in contrary to those who ruled the validity of praying behind the radio, such as Sheikh Ahmed Ibn Al-Siddiq Al-Amari and Sheikh Abdullah Ibn Al-Siddiq Al-Ammari; they all said that it is permissible for a Muslim to pray behind the radio or behind the sound of a telephone and to follow an Imam even there has a long distance between them. But, this is valid only when there is no difference in timing. For an example, if the announcer (Mudeeh) is in Makkah, for example, he broadcasts the prayer at the Masjid al-Haram while you are behind and you are in Makkah or close to Makkah, so it is permissible for you to follow the Imam of the Haram while you are at home. I do not support this, but this is their stance and their students’ doctrine too, and they opined it. I think you get it?
So the answer is that this man must be keen on his prayer, so if he is not assured on catching the movements of the Imam, then he does not follow him, and if the electricity is prior to disconnection and his voice may lost then too he does not follow him, but if he starts, and follow him, then he comes out with even Rakath. If he used to associate odds with another Rak'ath, he comes out from prayer first and then restart his prayer, this is the best solution.
